Captain/Pro Challenge Match
This week's challengers were Dave Ward and Alan Dickson. Also known as 'The Invincibles' for their unbeaten run in the Friday Night East Kent League, we knew this was going to be a tough one. The match started with the Captain winning the 1st hole with a birdie and the 2nd hole with a par resulting in a 2UP through two against what we thought were going to be our toughest opponents, they were more like 'The Invisibles'... this is that lesson in matchplay where you should never get too complacent. With holes 3, 4, 5 and 6 halved, 'The Invisibles' morphed into 'The Invincibles' and won 7, 8, 9 and 10 with birdies taking them 2UP. The 11th from the back tee should have been a challenge but both Dave and Alan hit shots onto the green and applied the pressure to the Captain and I. Fortunately, we managed to escape with a halve and moved onto 12 still 2DN. 12 was halved in 4s and knowing that we had to try and catch the guys, the Captain and I buckled under pressure and lost both of our balls from the tee taking us 3DN and struggling. On the 14th hole, all four of us hit perfect drives, being a shot hole for everyone, the chaps played to the corner and I was able to go for the green. My 9 iron finished just shy of the putting surface in two leaving a 20 foot putt, Barrie also hit his approach onto the green in 3 nett 2. Dave and Alan both struggled on the green, both making 5, leaving the Captain and I both three foot putts to win the hole and take the match to 2DN with four to play...Unfortunately, this did not happen, we both missed our short putts (should have been gimmies) and walked onto the 15th tee 3DN with four to play. Knowing we had to try and produce birdies all the way in, a few words were muttered to ourselves and we managed to get ourselves going. A 3 wood down the middle left a 5 iron to the green which allowed me to put some pressure on Dave who hit his 3rd shot to 15 foot of the hole. We were fortunate to win the hole with a birdie 4 and move onto the 16th.
With the Captain and I safely pin high, Alan stepped up and hit an 8 iron all over the pin to around 8 feet. We were safely on for a 3 meaning if Alan holed 'The Invincibles' would win 3&2.... Fortunately for us Alan’s putt lipped the hole. |
