Captain & Pro Match
Captain & Pro

So, this week the Captain and I took on challengers Lee Radford and James Atkins. We kind of knew it would be a tough match but we wasn’t expecting what unfolded.

With the Captain making his birdie at the first we routinely went 1UP. As always, this never lasts and James followed up with a birdie on the 2nd after a great approach. The 3rd hole was halved between Barrie and Lee with birdies. With the wind favourable on the 4th, I was able to hit my drive onto the middle of the green from the tee, James with a shot hit another close approach to halve the hole in birdie. The 5th hole saw Lee’s tee shot finish 30 yards to the right of the green with a difficult lie, I managed to hit two straight drives in a row driving the 5th green also which resulted in only a half as Lee pitched his shot to within 3 foot for another birdie.

The 6th hole saw the challenges begin to buckle leaking both of their shots to the right of the green, the Captain hit a fantastic tee shot that was seeking the green until it struck the “Buggies this way” sign and finished short left with a shot. I was able to hit the green applying some pressure to the chaps, with a slippery right to left chip, down hill and from a bare lie, Lee hit just the perfect chip which tracked the hole all the way and went in for a two winning them the hole and taking them 2UP through 6 holes.

The 7th was followed up with a 4 nett 3 by the challengers to take them 3UP and winning the front 9 side bet. Knowing we needed to get some momentum going, we hoped for a break in form, unfortunately for us 9 was halved with another birdie and Lee kindly dropped in that his 32 gross was his best front 9 ever since playing at Sene Valley...thanks.

2DN at the turn and fuelled on sausage rolls we started the back 9 in good form. Losing the 10th to get another birdie, the Captain was able to make a birdie at 11 and a par at 12 to keep us in the game at 2DN with six to play. Taking the honour on the 13th, Barrie navigated the fairway and I was able to lean on the tee shot and managed to drive the 13th green also. Thinking we were back in it, James then from 50 yards hit his approach to within 3 feet and secured yet another half with a birdie.

A driver and 9 iron on the 14th was only good enough for a birdie against James’s lethal chip which struck the flag in three and was good enough for a four nett eagle. The Captain and I were able to win 15 with another birdie bringing the match to 2DN with 3 to play. With the pressure mounting and the tensions rising, we were able to make our 4th consecutive birdie to be 1DN with two to play.

This is where the rollercoaster came to an end after James with a shot in hand played the hole to the textbook and hit the fairway then the green to result in a birdie and to go 2UP in the match. A consolation birdie on the 18th for us resulted in the challengers winning the first match of the year 1UP, when we totalled the scores, Lee and James were -12 and the Captain and myself were -11 with five birdies in the last six holes not good enough to catch them.

Our next challengers this weekend are Jason Spencer and Simon Hooper...
