This week’s challengers were Tony Marsh and Pete Richardson, with the captain and pro coming off a small break we were itching to get going. The first hole was won by Pete with a birdie after his approach finished 4 feet from the hole. The 2nd and 3rd were halved in pars, the 4th hole Pete hit his approach from the 18th fairway onto the green with a shot taking the challengers 2 up. The 5th hole was won by the captain with a birdie and then the 6th and 7th holes were won by Tony with two birdies securing a 2 up lead through the front 9. A rare sight was all 4 drives on the 10th fairway, with the guys all in position to hit their 3rd approaches onto the green, I had 120 yards and hit the approach to 15 feet. Tony hit his approach just inside and with my put sliding by the hole, Tony was able to hole his for his birdie to move to 3 up. Barrie with a shot at the 11th hit his approach to 10 feet and secured the birdie to take the match back to 2 down, the 12th and 13th were halved in 4’s and what seems to be usual territory at the moment we were 2 down with 5 to play. Stood on 14 we knew we needed to push and with a great drive and layup from Tony for the position it was a must-make birdie for us, I was able to hit my 2nd shot to within 20 feet applying what we thought would add pressure to Tony, completely unphased Tony hit his approach from 130 yards to within 5 feet and holed the putt for a birdie nett eagle and the 3 up lead. On the 15th the captain and I were clutching at straws and knew we needed to press, fortunately, the chaps struggled from the tee and we were able to win the 15th without the need to putt. The 16th was halved in 3’s between Tony and myself leaving the match dorm, the captain found his length on the 17th hitting a perfect drive and a fantastic approach to 15 feet and winning the hole with a 4 nett 3. 1 down stood on the 18th we knew we had to make a birdie, Tony once again played the hole fantastically, cruising his putt into gimmie distance shortly after the captain and myself missed our birdie chances. This means that we have 3 groups now tied for the Max Walter Cup on 1 up, Lee Radford and James Atkins, Simon Hooper and Jason Spencer, Pete Richardson and Tony Marsh. Good luck to our next challengers! |

Saturday - Presidents Day Another fabulous event was put on by our club president, Arthur Higgins. With over 160 members playing on the day in lovely conditions a fabulous day was enjoyed by all. With COVID restrictions, Arthur wasn't able to have his marquee at the halfway house to treat everyone to his usual spread of goodies, however, the presentation took place on Sunday evening where many members came along to support such a fantastic weekend. We would like to take this moment in thanking Arthur for all he does for the club and for creating such a great event each year with fabulous prizes and an amazing atmosphere within the club.

Yes, we're excited... The time has arrived as this weekend sees the start of the much-anticipated 36 hole Men's Club Championship. With the first round taking place this Saturday and then the final round on Sunday with the leaders going out in reverse order, it has all the potential of being one of the best ever. I don't think we have such low handicaps, well not in recent years, that have all been showing such fine form. On paper, Martin Farbrace has to be the favourite but with the recent influx of low handicap Juniors, there are a number of players that could be lifting the trophy in just over a week's time. Let's wait and see and I will be enjoying watching the rounds unfold!

It's Major week This weekend's U.S. Open will feature plenty of familiar faces with the likes of Dustin Johnson, Tiger Woods and new-father Rory McIlroy all teeing it up in New York. Given the dominance of these players in recent years, it might be foolish to look past them when considering who might be crowned champion, but that’s exactly what we’re going to do. Webb Simpson is certainly worth a look in our eyes. A couple of wins and regular top-10 finishes in the just-finished season means confidence will be sky-high. Speaking of confidence, Collin Morikawa won the PGA Championship in just his second Major start and looks like he’s just warming up. Will fatherhood have Rory firing or tiring? Can DJ get over the line at another Major? Or is it time for somebody else to take centre-stage at Winged Foot GC? We can't wait to find out! If the year’s second Major has you itching to play better golf, send us a message below and let us know which part of your game needs the most attention.
