Each week I will be writing a blog for everyone to read and hopefully enjoy. Just some fun and not always golf-related or about me you'll be glad to hear. My first ever EuroPro Tour Event… This week's blog ties into last week's blog in a way “worst first day at work.” I was working at Etchinghill Golf Club and doing my PGA Training when EuroPro Qualifying was coming up. Charlie and Jack were both going and rightly so, both very good full time golfers. County champions and National squad players. You might have even seen Charlie's course record scorecard sitting behind one of the fire extinguishers in the cleaning closet. They persuaded me to go, reluctantly I joined them. I wasn't playing much and didn't think I belonged on the EuroPro Tour. It was so last minute that we had to share a twin room between the 3 of us. Stage 1 was at Stoke by Nayland Golf & Country Club. The loser in the practice round had to sleep on the floor... Let's just say I didn't sleep great. We all made it through to the second stage at Frilford Heath Golf Club. We stayed in a haunted hotel this time. I've always had the gift of booking the worst hotels and Princess Charlie isn't one to moan is he... Anyway, I actually managed to shoot 5 under round 1 and we all went on to secure playing rights on the EuroPro Tour that year. The first event was at Wensum Valley. I played 2 solid rounds of golf, nothing spectacular but I was happy with it. I came out of the scoring hut and looked at the leaderboard, somehow my name was at the top. I was leading the event, a shop boy with hardly any playing experience was leading. They couldn't even find me to do an interview as they didn't know who I was or looked like, I heard them asking other players who I was on the putting green. The 'Big Day', The Final Round. I ended up 1 back going into the final round, Second to last group. The first tee shot...FORE LEFT...! I managed to hit it onto the wrong fairway. That seemed to be the order of the day for me. I shot 82 and it was back to selling Mars bars for me. As we all know the highs and lows come and go in this game, you've just got to ride with them. Tune in next week for the next instalment of Bruce's Blog |
